There was a requirement to provide voice and data communications
on Songo Songo Island.for an on-shore drilling
campaign. As there were no land line facilities available VOIP was the only
solution. MACOM Consulting, the data network suppliers installed a C Band VSAT
on the island with a 512K synchronous connection.
The Solution
SGJ Solutions Installed a Vegastream ISDN2 unit in MACOM's London
office as the client did not have a UK presence A Snom 4S Proxy was installed
to drive the VOIP system, with Snom 300 handsets deployed on the island. VPN
tunnels were then built between MACOM offices,Songo Songo Island and clients main
office in Dar es Salaam The Panasonic phone system installed at the Dar office
was then connected to UK Vegastream via a Linksys ATA, thus providing VoIP
capabilities on the switch.
The Result
The Island could communicate with the Dar office despite a double hop VPN with a 1200ms to 1400ms latency and vice versa all for no cost
The Island could dial normal PSTN numbers by breaking out through London
Selected handsets on the Island had the ability to be dialled direct via London DDI numbers
The ability to hold conference calls between sites was also possible
The system has created considerable cost savings
